A D&C may be used as a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure for abnormal bleeding. A D&C may be performed to determine the cause of abnormal or excessive uterine bleeding, to detect cancer, or as part of infertility (inability to become pregnant) investigation.

After diagnostic D&C, a pathologist examines the tissue with a microscope to evaluate for certain conditions such as endometrial polyps, precancer of the lining of the uterus (endometrial hyperplasia), or endometrial (uterine) cancer.

During a D&C, your doctor will scrape a bigger sample of tissue from the lining of your uterus for testing at a lab. Endometrial biopsies aren’t perfect. Because they take a random tissue sample, they can sometimes miss precancerous or cancerous growths. If your symptoms don’t go away, tell your doctor.
